Middle school students, under the tutelage of Social Studies teacher, Matthew Rice, Bennington College professor and sculptor, Jon Isherwood and staff at both BC and MAUHS, are designing and creating a public sculpture that will be placed at The Bennington Museum. This will be the first project in creating a walking tour for residents and tourists that will educate the viewer on local history, while promoting other points of interest within the community. The project is a collaboration and involves many individuals, businesses and organizations in the community. The project theme is: “Vermont: Living in a State of Independence.” From its earliest days, Vermont has been a state that, patterned by its diverse thinkers, has proven time and time again that it is a place of independence. The word “state” doubles in meaning in this title: on the one hand, “state” references the idea of Vermont’s statehood; on the other, it refers to a way of thinking, or “state of mind.” from the beginning.
